The fifth book in a series of seven set in the near future, following the survivors of a deadly virus that has decimated the population of the planet. The core group is based out of two colonies in western Massachusetts, but some members who flew to New Mexico on a mercy mission became stranded when their plane broke down. In order to repair the plane and get home, the group of nine must travel six-hundred miles by horseback to Kansas to retrieve the necessary parts. The main colony experiences its first murder. The secondary colony's existence is threatened by multiple attacks.
