Metallica is een band die het hele metalgenre heeft gevormd. Van de beginjaren aan de voorhoede van de thrash tot de grote, experimentele producties op het wereldtoneel. Na de release van hun derde album, Master of Puppets , dat wordt beschouwd als een van de meest invloedrijke heavy thrash metalalbums ooit, nam de ontwikkeling van de band een vlucht. Metallica heeft wereldwijd 100 miljoen platen verkocht (58 miljoen in de VS), 9 Grammy Awards gewonnen en 6 albums hebben de nummer één positie in de Billboard 200 bereikt.
