The work is narrated in the first person as an autobiographical memory told by a horse named Azabache starting off with his happy days as a foal on an English farm, continuing with his difficult life in London pulling cabriolets, until his happy retirement in the country. During his journey, he encounters many difficulties and tells many stories of cruelty and kindness. Each small chapter tells an incident in the life of Azabache that contains a lesson or moral typically related to kindness, sympathy, and also about the treatment of horses; With detailed observations and extensive descriptions of equine behavior, the novel is given a nice touch of verisimilitude.
