Gussie Mae stumbled onto the Warren Farm in the hills of North Carolina. She was tired, broke down, and needed a place to make a new start. Chad Warren, owner of Warren Farm, provides Gussie Mae shelter in return for labor. When it is discovered Gussie Mae has powers to heal the sick with herbs and roots, she is soon bestowed the title "Root Woman." Gussie Mae becomes a critical part of the Warren family life along with many other farm workers.
