Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote several essay books, commonly associated with transcendentalism and romanticism. "Essays" most commonly refers to his first two series of essays: Some of the most notable essays in these two collections are Self-Reliance, Compensation, The Over-Soul, Circles, The Poet, Experience, and Politics. Emerson later wrote several more essay books, including Representative Men, English Traits, The Conduct of Life and Society, and Loneliness. Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 - April 27, 1882) was an American essayist, teacher, philosopher, and poet who led the transcendental movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as an advocate of individualism and a prophetic critic of society's countervailing pressures, and he spread his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures in the United States. Emerson gradually distanced himself from the religious and social beliefs of his contemporaries, formulating and expressing the philosophy of transcendentalism in his 1836 essay "Nature".
