This is the story of Thana, short for Thanadeltth'er, a Dënes?l??ne girl. In 1713, Cree warriors devastated her camp. They killed many and took hostages, among which Thana and her friend Ashanti. The Cree were hostile to the Dënes?l??ne tribe, whom they suspect to be trading with the Hudson Bay Company, on which they hold exclusive rights. Thanadeltth'er's life comes alive through the 1714-1717 records written by James Knight for the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) post at York Factory (also known as Fort York). These records refer to her as "Slave Woman" even though she was not, in fact, a slave while working for the HBC.
