Johnson County is your typical Midwestern rural county. This week happens to be their annual fair week. The county is filled with the rich, the poor, and the in-between trying to fit in somewhere. It is also the late 1980s when the last of the gen-Xers are coming of age. They are being influenced by fashions, hair bands, alcohol, drugs, peer pressure, and members of the opposite sex as they try to grow up dealing with the end of the Cold War and their Baby Boomer parents. Derek Hillard is running in his first demolition derby to help his friends the Tyner Boys battle the rich kids the JC Mafia, one of which happens to be Greg Roberts. Over the years the Tyners and the JC Mafia have never gotten along. They have argued and fought about anything and everything. The two groups have determined that the outcome of this year's Johnson County Fair Demolition Derby will determine which group is superior. Emily has reluctantly come to Johnson County to visit her family and celebrate his Grandmother's birthday. Finding true love was the farthest thing from her mind until she first laid eyes on Derek. It was love at first sight for both of them leading to a modern-day Romeo and Juliet coming of age romance. Emily lives miles away and returning home at the end of the week. Will their romance be able to survive?
