Tholly, a novelette set in 1980s India, shows the childhood of Nambardaar, the protagonist of Knock on the Soul. The fourteen-year-old boy faces the hardships of life when he takes his father to the city's government hospital for treatment. He witnesses greed, corruption, pain, poverty, negligence, social disparity, and communal differences. Money is the only thing that can save me from all of these, the son of a humble farmer realizes. I was born poor, but I won't die poor. I need to be rich, very rich. No matter what it takes, , 14-year-old Tholly makes a promise to himself.
