A derivative instrument is a financial instrument which derives its value from the value of some other financial instrument or variable. It is contract between two parties that specifies conditions (especially the dates, resulting values of the underlying variables, and notional amounts) under which payments are to be made between two parties. Financial risk an umbrella term for multiple types of risk associated with financing, which is managed by derivatives.
