Toward a Broader Appreciation of Human Motion in Education: the Value of Human Motion
Graham Dodd
Human motion is a fundamental activity for the healthy functioning human organism. Its importance, however, is increasingly devalued in Western cultures as they speed toward adopting technologies & virtual experiences as adjuncts to, and even replacements for, traditional education structures and processes that involve physical activity. Organised & reflective experience of human motion is becoming increasingly marginalised in teaching methodologies and learning programs in education institutions at all levels around the globe. This book provides a greater insight into why human motion is not valued & more utilised in education. In particular, why learning areas that directly represent involvement with human motion, such as physical & health education, continually struggle for recognition. It focuses on the causes rather than symptoms of the disuse & devaluation of human motion in education. The pervasive influence of mind-body dualism on education practices is identified as an immense damaging force, but a strong effective rebuttal to illuminate human monistic (oneness) existence is provided. A conceptualisation of human motion in education for new times of uncertainty is provided.
