How to Travel Safely in Japan
Yasumi Roan
A charming best-selling travel book, published in Japan in 1810. Yasumi Roan, a well-travelled author, was encouraged to write down his advice for first-time travelers. The book he produced became a best-seller at a time when people from all social status had the means to set out on trips to visit famous cities, temples and shrines. Yasumi Roan's advice covers all aspects of travel from when to depart, what to bring, how to pick accommodation and to how to avoid being tricked by Yokai (ghosts) while walking alone in the forest. This is an expanded edition that adds illustrations from the early 19th century as well as translations of the official travel documents and permits issued to men, women, Samurai as well as those transporting matchlock rifles. In addition, a translation of a 1830 illustrated essay about how to raise children is included. The essay introduces various martial arts and discusses why they are important for children to learn.
