The Hospitality of Presence
Daniel Birnbaum
The Hospitality of Presence - originally published in 1998 but long out of
print - is a study of the concept of otherness in Edmund Husserl's
phenomenology. In the late 1990s, Birnbaum's book gained international
attention in academic circles, was reviewed favorably in specialized
philosophy journals and quoted extensively by Paul Ricoeur in one of the
legendary French thinker's last books. This new edition of Birnbaum's
groundbreaking work includes a new introduction by the author, an essay
about the limits of phenomenology by philosopher Sven-Olov Wallenstein
and a special project by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. Preface by Hans
Ulrich Obrist, postface by Sven-Olov Wallenstein.
