Persuasion
Jane Austen
Anne Elliot was nobody with her father or her sisters. She was only Anne. Seven or more years ago she was persuaded to give up her understanding with a young naval ofï¬cer; for Captain Frederick Wentworth, RN, had risen without trace and therefore could not be approved of by Lady Russell, a quietly manipulative friend of the family. Now aged twenty-seven, Anne experiences only anguish when Wentworth reappears, in company with other ofï¬cers whom peacetime has washed ashore. After a shocking accident on the Cobb at Lyme Regis, effectively closed for the winter, and an enforced visit to Bath, with its stultifying card-parties and polite nothings, Anne faces a future that will if anything be less certain than the one to which she has resigned herself. All she can be sure of is that it will be very different.
If you have ever expected Jane Austen's novels to be difï¬cult to read, the LINE CLEAR edition is the one for you. Here is Jane Austen's classic novel in Jane Austen's words, made approachable by clear type and a clear layout, modern spelling and modern typography. The innovative chapter titles and contents list, derived from the text, will guide the familiar reader back to favourite passages without revealing the plot to a new reader. The cover image is taken from a Cassini Old Series map, using mapping ï¬rst published by the Ordnance Survey between 1813 and 1819 (Jane Austen died in 1817), and is reproduced by kind permission of Cassini Publishing Ltd. The front cover is centred on Lyme Regis in Dorset (referred to by Austen as Lyme). Nearby Charmouth, Pinney (now Pinhay) and Uplyme are also referred to in the novel.
