A planetary epidemic has ravaged the human race, leaving few survivors. Doctors Shift Bader and Anta Chalthoum, previously isolated underground, lead a small team to the surface to begin rebuilding a shattered world. As they rise to search for the living, they finally see the devastation first-hand, and soon realize that survival was only the beginning of their struggle.

A new peril emerges - not a mindless bacterium, but a focused, calculating opponent, determined to destroy those who remain.
