This is a story about a Kenya woman set in during the latter half of the twentieth century until present-day Kenya. Throughout her life and the other characters, she is forced to deal with forced marriage, wife inheritance, gender norms, and the ubiquitous cultural clash between traditional ways of life and modern mores. An important theme that runs through the book is the attempt to break the mold, with varying success levels. The crossroads that she encounters present enormous challenges that sometimes have her bucking tradition in very direct ways.
