Without really meaning to Patrick finds himself part of an All-Ireland study trip to the war cemeteries of the Somme, 100 years on from the infamous battle. This experience is to change the course of his life; he meets Magdalena; German but middle-eastern in appearance, beautiful but enigmatic and mysterious, Lena draws him into a coming-of-age adventure... from cycling on the Ring of Kerry to climbing in the Bavarian Alps, from singing at a Thiepval Tower commemoration to busking on the streets of Munich. In finding and loving each other they begin to discover themselves and to come to terms with the complexities of their personal histories.
