Mona Mogahed is a forty-something Egyptian Muslim woman struggling to eke out a living in the town of Vanier, Ontario, three years after her husband Mahmoud Mogahed passed away. Mona's adult son Ali Mogahed ends up in prison after running wild and committing petty crimes. With no one to turn to, and shamed by her conservative community, the lonely Mona strikes a friendship with Jean-Pierre Boudreau, a young Haitian student who was one of Ali's close friends at Algonquin College. Mona's friendship with Jean-Pierre soon turns into more. They fall for each other. Is the City of Ottawa ready for this interfaith, age-gap interracial romance ?
