Carl woke up at 4:20 a.m., lying frozen in his bed. Maybe it was fear or something worse but he could not move. He lie there with his eyes open, his ears hearing every sound, his nose smelling the shoes he had taken off the night before. His sensors seemed greatly enhanced; nonetheless, he still lie frozen.
