A thrilling romance set during the French Revolution. Lady Lenore Beldon had been promised in marriage to a man she detested. Her fiance, Sir Richard Deal, was a cold, cruel man who loved only her title but, in obedience to her father she sets out to join him at his estate near London. Staying at a small country inn after her coach broke an axle she overhears a plot to assassinate the Prince of Wales but the man she runs to for help is, himself, embroiled in the plan and she is taken prisoner. Help comes from a highwayman who calls himself Captain Black and together they foil the attempt. She'd always dreaded the thought of marriage to Sir Richard, but how much more so after realising she had fallen in love with her rescuer. She had sensed that he was not what he seemed but at a soirée in London, at the house of the charming Marquis de Serran, she learns his true identity. How could she guess that the discovery would lead her to the very steps of the guillotine?
