Captain Hirick, commander of a fleet from an extraterrestrial Empire arrives at ancient Earth to defend the Empire's base there from the approaching fleet of an enemy who also claims title to the planet. Both fleets manage to destroy each other, and the survivors transfer planet-side to continue the battle. Not only must Hirick deal with accommodating the survivors of his fleet at a base ill prepared for such a contingency, but also the orchestrations of the incompetent base commander who is a thorn in his side from the start. Then there's that small matter of preparing for the enemy's next move.
