Kentucky's Civil War Battlefields: A Guide to Their History and Preservation

Jacket Description/Flap: Though Kentucky was the home of both Jefferson Davis-the president of the Confederate States of America-and Abraham Lincoln, Governor Magoffin proclaimed neutrality during the Civil War. However, once the shots were fired at Fort Sumter, citizens and government members began taking sides. The state soon became the site of some of the most vicious Civil War conflicts and bloodshed. Beginning with Barbourville in 1861, this volume covers the thirteen major Civil War battles that took place within the borders of the Bluegrass State. Sections chronicle such battles as Perryville, Paducah, Richmond, and Cynthiana-the final battle. The historical battlegrounds serve as a tribute to the Confederate and Union soldiers who fought and fell under fire. Though many of these sites have been preserved, some have fallen into disrepair. This pictorial guide provides a contemporary description of each location's level of preservation, along with maps from Blue & Gray magazine. Randy Bishop is a teacher at Middleton High School, an adjunct for the University of Memphis, and an advocate for the preservation of sites related to the American Civil War.
