Masefield academy for young gentlemen, the brain child of a disreputable entrepeneur, Peter Tucker. Classics scholar and school head, Dr Bernard Lello is living proof that incompetance bolsters eminence. A stranger named Cymbeline arrives and having displayed a singular talent for disappearing when immersed in water, finds himself a resident of a plutonium irradiated pond at the school boathouse. School groundsman Reginald Weirfoyle and arch enemy, Doctor Hubert Coulthard, physics professor and man of mephistophelian sensibilities and arcane secrets become embroiled in a life and death conflict. School boys, Auberon Hitchens and best friend Robin Sullivan embark upon a surreal adventure within the school where the dark shadows of a Faustian world encroach upon the fringes of their reality. Their inevitably inept, sometimes catastrophic and often humourous ministrations in an attempt to help Cymbeline nearly end in chaos.
