Jean-Baptiste Poncet is practicing medicine in the court of the Shah, in Isfahan, Persia. To rescue an old friend, Juremi, imprisoned in the Urals, Poncet travels to Russia where he engages in a duel of wits with Peter the Great. On their journey back the friends are captured and sold as slaves.
