Caught up in the wave of fear and hate brought on by the first World War, Allen Evans tries to find his own way forward and claim what he wants in life. Unfortunately for Allen, what he wants happens to be a German girl, and in a time when the German Empire and America are at war, their relationship is well beyond a taboo. Allen's biggest problem may not have been the war, however, as much as that girl's aggressive brother. They were never supposed to be friends, after all, because the Germans were enemies. Allen must choose which path is right for him: to follow in his father's footsteps and let the river carry him away, or to veer off and try to be with someone he wants. Either way, he might have just been damned.
