Hannah finally gets her wish. She sits down on two occasions in face-to-face meetings with General Lester Mannix. She finds the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs to be obstinate, hard headed and narcissistic. But then she finds herself understanding his nature when he explains why he has to be that way. They debate for hours and meet on common ground. Marty is thrown into jail and has an almost magical experience with a candy bar, of all things. South of Lubbock, Frank and Josie narrowly escape an ambush which would have killed them both. They're not completely off the hook, for they were totally unaware they came close to dying. And their would-be assassin is making plans to try again.
