God's Struggler

A real-life account of a lonely and troubled man called David, who, through the use of drugs, tries to escape a crippling sense of hopelessness in a seemingly meaningless existence. He stumbles across many others who are seeking answers to big questions. All are similarly lost and broken, only coping with the aid of chemicals that change perceptions or merely dull the frustrations of being alone.
Some would survive the lifestyle and others would not. Death never seemed to be far away; suicidal and reckless thoughts led to actions that should have killed him. But there was something else - someone else - who was always going ahead of him on his self-indulgent path to destruction.
As time went by, the road would narrow, and the identity of this helper would become clearer until one day it became undeniable.
David also had an enemy, an old acquaintance that he once loved more than anything or anybody in the world. There could be no immediate happy ever after, but rather an ongoing struggle to let go of this acquaintance as the war of truth and lies that had waged over his soul intensified.
This war is told through David's thoughts, as if they were people with opposing agendas. David would come to understand that everybody in the world was in this same war and so had a responsibility to join his friend on the battlefield, though he would often be injured himself because of unwise choices.
Yet through it all his friend was still going ahead of him, would still pick him up when injured, and would not stop loving him. Ultimately, this is an account of that love.
