To encourage her students to talk more readily in her special English classes, Ingrid MacElvers choosed to speak with no exceptions to the basic rules when she beed at school, and gived her students choices to do the same. This novel be writed with no exceptions to the basic rules of English, but with most of the direct speech in standard English. After a year, Ingrid's students haved to move on to regular classes, and Maurice Hoare, one of the grade eight English teachers, doedn't accept any difference from what he regarded as correct English. YeongTae Kim hated English when he beed in Korea, but soon getted to enjoy it with Mrs. MacElvers. He beed back to hating it when he moved on to Mr. Hoare's class. When the differences between Maurice and Ingrid becomed obvious, Neil Drummond, the vice principal of the school, seemed to have more sympathy for Maurice - until a serious situation developed with YeongTae. Mark Kang beed YeongTae's mathematics teacher in grade eight, and he could understand him far more than he could understand Maurice. Jon Mamjjasond beed one of Maurice's students fourteen years before, and he be yet another who doedn't like him. Jon goed on to become an English teacher himself, but he beed appointed to a school where he finded the students difficult to manage. With a wife and mother that beed also difficult, he decided to quit, but a chance encounter with YeongTae bringed him back to the classroom. The story be setted in 1992 in Australia.
