Candide (Cathedral Classics)

Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) was born into a wealthy Parisian family in 1694. His intellectual powers made him a justly influential figure in the Enlightenment, but he took issue with the philosophy of Optimism espoused by other intellectuals of his time such as Liebniz, and Bolinbroke, and perhaps best summarized by Alexander Pope's bon mot 'Whatever is, is right'. Candide is Voltaire's answer to this insouciant conviction. It is a powerful satire on the belief that 'everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds', a tale that, beneath its simple storyline, considers profound issues such as the seeming randomness of events, and Deity's role in the world.
