After a lifetime of running from his past, Christopher Sterling, all but penniless, takes a position as a domestic servant, despite a plethora of warning signs: suspiciously high pay, a crumbling house all but lost in an overgrown yard, shadows flickering behind the broken panes of dark dormer windows. Yet the opportunity proves too good to pass up - in terms of curiosity as much as coin.
Inside, he finds the place all but abandoned - by living things, at least. Paintings hang in their dozens, from every possible surface, the same face staring out of all of them. Their creator? A reclusive, irascible, yet strangely intriguing man with a limp, obsessive tendencies and more than a few secrets locked away behind those smoky blue eyes.
The farther Christopher delves into the mysteries of 1707 Garner Street, the more questions he has - and the more danger he, and everyone around him, are in. The safest thing would be to take what he can and continue his journey out west.
Then again, it may not be the house that's haunted.
