Ten-year-old John Daniel is found to be the last person to see his eight-year-old sister alive. While the police investigation focuses on him, the case soon grows cold. Rocky O'Hara-a P. I. who has recently moved from Atlanta, Georgia, to Portland, Maine-is hired by family member Margaret Powell to investigate. Rocky had solved a similar case in Atlanta, a case which haunts him still.
John Daniel-who everyone recognizes as being "different"-and his mother appear a bit too closed-mouthed for Rocky's comfort, while Margaret seems determined to solve the girl's murder. Then out of the blue, Rocky receives a letter from Margaret dismissing him from the case. Why? Has she learned something that Rocky has yet to uncover? This murder mystery will haunt Rocky, John Daniel, and his family into the twenty-first century.
