Best of the Independent Journals in Rhetoric and Composition 2012

Publisher Marketing: THE BEST OF THE INDEPENDENT RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION JOURNALS 2012 represents the result of a nationwide conversation-beginning with journal editors, but expanding to teachers, scholars and workers across the discipline of Rhetoric and Composition-to select essays that showcase the innovative and transformative work now being published in the field's independent journals. Representing both print and digital journals in the field, the essays featured here explore issues ranging from classroom practice to writing in global and digital contexts, from writing workshops to community activism. Together, the essays provide readers with a rich understanding of the present and future direction of the field. In addition to the introduction by Steve Parks, Beverly Moss, Julia Voss, Brian Bailie, Heather Christiansen, and Stephanie Ceraso, the anthology features work by the following authors and representing these journals: Jamie White-Farnham (COMMUNITY LITERACY JOURNAL), Noah R. Roderick (COMPOSITION FORUM), Kate Pantelides and Mariaelena Bartesaghi (COMPOSITION STUDIES), Heidi A. McKee (COMPUTERS AND COMPOSITION), Rex Veeder (ENCULTURATION), Matthew Pavesich (JOURNAL OF BASIC WRITING), Kelly S. Bradbury (THE JOURNAL OF TEACHING WRITING), Derek N. Mueller (KAIROS), Richard H. Thames (KB JOURNAL), Jeanne Marie Rose (PEDAGOGY), and Melvette Melvin Davis (REFLECTIONS). Contributor Bio:  Parks, Steve At the age of 16 when Steve Parks told his school careers adviser that he wanted to work for the BBC or run his own business they laughed and suggested a career in electronic engineering. Steve began his career as a journalist and presenter for BBC Radio in 1994. His work has been broadcast on Radio 4, Radio 5-Live, Radio 1, Radio 2, BBC TV and the 'Today' programme. He left the BBC to form his own company, which is now the UK's leading publisher of business audio. Steve has written articles for business magazines, comedy sketches for BBC's Dead Ringers and is currently working on his first novel. The author draws his knowledge for this book from his own career, and also from the experiences of close friends who are successful entrepreneurs. He is regularly approached by people for advice on starting their own business, and has launched a vast community for entrepreneurs, Flyingstartups.com, helping startups to network and gain tips, advice, and ongoing support. Contributor Bio:  Bailie, Brian Despite being 'asked to leave' school at 16, Brian Bailie has made his mark as an entrepreneur in a variety of creative enterprises including commercial artist, furniture designer, product design consultant, copywriter, and mentor. In 1999 Brian was elected a member of the Chartered Society of Designers, and a professional member of American Society of Furniture Designers. By 2003 the international demand of his licensed products led Brian to establish a manufacturing operation in China with a couple of Texan expats based in Hangzhou. Today this business manages the China-side manufacturing and marketing activities for ambitious Western businesses, ensuring that their clients reap the benefits of doing business in China. Brian's other books include: Alzheimer's Timeline, a lay-men's study of dementia in the family; The Broncle, a curious tale of adoption and reunion; and Raising a Smile, a children's book of story and rhymes, in support of NI Children's Hospice.
