Hannah Beiler loves her life in the Amish community in Ephraim, Pennsylvania, but sometimes the routine makes her wonder if there is more to life. When brother and sister Jacob and Miriam Hostetler arrive from Ohio under a cloud of mystery, several members of the community are put out by Jacob's progressive suggestions for bettering the community through commerce at the local market. They want rid of him and his dangerous ideas. Hannah has an immediate connection with Jacob and is horrified to hear that the elders intend to vote on whether or not the Hostetlers may stay in Ephraim. Will she lose the man she has grown to love before her affections are sealed in marriage, or does God have plans to open the eyes of the elders to a new way of living?
